We are a small group based in Malta who care about one thing on this island more than is reasonable, and have decided to be systematic about it.

Why this exists

Malta has more pizzerias than a country this size has any right to, and the quality runs from among the best in the Mediterranean to frozen dough on a conveyor. Ask where to eat and you get ten answers, all confident, none comparable.

Every other list on the subject publishes an unexplained top ten. This one publishes the working: the criteria, the weightings, the visit dates, and every position that has ever moved and why. Disagree with a score and you can disagree with it on the same terms we arrived at it.

What we cover

Pizza in Malta and Gozo. That is the whole remit. Not restaurants generally, not travel, not recipes, not the island's other cooking, however good it is.

The narrowness is deliberate. A site that reviews everything compares nothing. Scoring one dish against a fixed model is the only way the numbers mean anything from one entry to the next.

How we work

Published method
Six criteria, fixed weightings, stated in full on the method page and unchanged mid-year. Dough carries 30 of 100 because it is the only part of a pizza that cannot be bought in.
Unannounced visits
Minimum two before anything is published. Nobody is told we are coming, every bill is paid at full price, and no meal is ever comped.
Nothing for sale
No position in the ranking can be bought at any price. Advertising is sold against pages, never against places, and no advertiser sees the order before it publishes.
Dated and revised
Kitchens change, so the ranking changes with them. Every move is recorded with a date and a reason on the change log. Nothing is edited quietly.

We are always finding places worth adding. If yours deserves a position, or you think we have missed one, send the name and the locality to editor@bestpizzamalta.com. Two visits are required before anything appears, so nothing happens quickly.
